Acclimation - ianb  

To Acclimate. To adjust to new conditions or an environment. An example of acclimation is the adjustment of your reptile to get used to its new conditions and environment.


Adaptation - IanB  

An inherited (genetically controlled) characteristic of an organism that helps it to survive and reproduce in the environment it inhabits. These are often interpreted as evolutionary changes in response to selection pressures present in that environment.


Aestivate - ianb  

A rare state of dormancy similar to hibernation, but during the months of the summer. Animals that estivate spend a summer inactive and insulated against heat to avoid the potentially harmful effects of the season (such as the increase in temperature, or relative lack of water), or to avoid contact with other species with which they may otherwise be in competition, or for which they are prey. Some animals, including the California red-legged frog, may estivate to conserve energy when their food and water supply is low


albino - IanB  

A lack of pigment in the skin. (Pinkness comes from the blood color)


Allele - ianb  

either of the two paired genes which affect an inheritable trait.


ambient temperature - IanB  

The overall temperature of the environment.


Amelanistic - ianb  

having no melanin


Amniote - IanB  

An animal that produces an embryo within a sac that contains amniotic fluid. Amniotes include turtles, lizards, snakes, tuataras, crocodilians, birds, and mammals.


Amplexus - IanB  

A reproductive behavior in frogs where the male grasps the female from behind. This positions his vent near hers to assure fertilization


anterior - IanB  

Pertains to the front or head end.


anterioventral - IanB  

Pertains to the front of the lower surface


anus - IanB  

An opening at the base of the tale. (see cloaca)


Aquarium - ianb  

This is an enclosure that is filled with water and inhabits aquatics such as fish or frogs in.

Lives in the water.


Arboreal - IanB  

Arboreal is a word meaning "related to or resembling trees". Its meaning comes from the Latin arbor, meaning tree. In biology, an arboreal animal is one which inhabits or spends large amounts of time in trees or bushes.


ATB - ianb  

Amazon Tree Boa


autotomy - IanB  

The voluntary shedding of the body parts of animals, usually in defense. Autotomy of the tail is common in many lizards.


Axanthic - ianb  

having no yellow color.


Axillary - IanB  

The area on the sides and belly, behind or below the front legs. The "armpit" area.
